The number of people living with HIV in the country has reached more than 32,000, according to Suruwat, an organisation that works to eliminate stigma associated with HIV/AIDS and drug use.

There are 32,735 people in the country who are living with HIV, said Executive Director of Suruwat Rajesh Didiya at a function organised on the occasion of International Condom Day in Bhaktapur on Sunday.

Rabi Singh, who is a representative of AIDS Health Care Foundation, said out of 32,735 HIV infected people in the country, only 23,000 have come out in public and the rest are still leading anonymous lives.

Noting that 85 percent of the HIV infected people in the country had contracted the virus through unsafe sex, Singh stressed the need of organising awareness programmes to encourage safe sex and use of prophylactics among young population.

Suruwat is organising a free HIV/AIDS test service at the Bhaktapur Durbar Square on Tuesday as part of the organisation’s awareness programme.
