The EC has to hold the presidential election within a month of the formation of the House of Representatives and Provincial Assemblies according to Clause 4 (2) of the Act on the Elections for President and Vice President-2017, The law allows the EC to decide the date for election and inform the government. “We will announce the election date either on Saturday or Sunday after consulting with new Prime Minister,” said Election Commissioner Sudhir Shah.
CPN (UML) Chairman KP Sharma Oli was elected new Prime Minister on Thursday. EC officials said they seek an appointment with PM Oli to discuss this matter. The EC has notified political parties the potential dates it wants to hold the presidential and vice-presidential elections.
During the meeting with leaders of the five national parties — UML, Nepali Congress, CPN (Maoist Centre), Rastriya Janata Party-Nepal and Sanghiya Samajwadi Forum-Nepal on Thursday, the Chief Election Commissioner Ayodhee Prasad Yadav informed they planned to hold the presidential and vice-presidential elections on March 5 and March 15 respectively.
