DNA test eases action against smuggler of animal parts
Feb 18, 2018-
DNA tests of animals, initiated by the National Forensic Lab, has eased the process of taking action against smugglers of animal parts. Principal Scientist Dinesh Jha at the lab said the DNA test has enabled proper investigation which is also facilitating the justice system. The lab started the DNA tests this fiscal year.
“Earlier, it was not possible to distinguish the flesh and other bodily parts of animals,” Jha said. “But now the DNA test has made it possible to identify the body parts of animals even if their forms are changed over the time.” The lab has performed the DNA tests of four cows and 11 wild animals in the past seven months.
