A special ceremony was held at the Nepal Army Pavilion in Tundhikhel, Kathmandu.
President Bidya Devi Bhandari, Vice President Nanda Bahadur Pun, newly appointed Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Chief Justice Gopal Prasad Parajuli released pigeons, praying for peace in the country.
On the occasion, an Army squad offered a gun-salute to the head of state. Participants also observed one-minute silence in memory of martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the sake of the country and the people.Personnel of three security agencies demonstrated their skills while two NA helicopters showered flowers from the air.
The day commemorates democracy that was established in the country on February 18, 1951 after overthrowing the 104-year-long Rana oligarchy. The government declared Sunday as a public holiday to mark the occasion. (PR)
