Top leaders of main opposition Nepali Congress (NC) have asked fellow partymen to play effective role as opposition in Parliament.
Inaugurating an orientation programme for party lawmakers representing the House of Representatives (HoR), National Assembly and Provincial Assemblies on Wednesday, party President and former prime minister Sher Bahadur Deuba called on the participating leaders to play constructive role in Parliament for strengthening democracy.
The programme was aimed at training party lawmakers about their role in the Federal Parliament as opposition leaders, said party’s Spokesperson Bishwa Prakash Sharma, adding that the lawmakers were informed about the parliamentary process, and issues on current social and economic matters of the country.
The leaders said that the party, which has been fighting for democracy in the country since 1950, has now got the responsibility of doing its role as the opposition in the Federal Parliament and State Assembly to institutionalise and strengthen the federal democratic republic system.
Party senior leader Ramchandra Poudel and General Secretary Shashanka Koirala also stressed the need of a responsible and effective role of the party as the opposition in Parliament to further consolidate democracy.
In the closed session of the programme, party leaders informed lawmakers about party’s position in the various issues. A total of 189 NC lawmakers participated in the programme.
