Although it was the second time in many years that a Pakistani premier visited Nepal, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi’s visit to the country has been taken with emphasis. What can be said for certain is his main reason for visiting our land was not just to strengthen the current relation between the two South Asian countries (‘Nepal and Pakistan agree to revive Saarc’, March 6, Page 1).

He also wanted Nepal to help Pakistan maintain balance in the South Asian region and to counter effectively the perceived Indian monopoly. Besides, Nepal will also be a country of great use to Pakistan when it comes to making the Belt and Road Initiative—brought about by China—a success. Pakistan itself is also an important member country of this initiative. Now what we need to do is hope and pray. Nepal must be able to cash in on the opportunity that has presented itself.
