Police seized a woman’s body from funeral pyre at Katahariya Municipality-5 in Rautahat district on Tuesday, suspecting the victim was beaten to death.
Acting on a tip-off, security personnel from Area Police Office in Katahariya confiscated Rajkumari Devi’s body from the crematorium while the relatives and neighbours were preparing to perform the funeral rites.
Preliminary police investigation shows the victim died after husband Bijaya Sah Sonar thrashed her following a dispute on Monday night.
In a bid to destroy evidence, the suspect’s brothers and nephews took the woman’s body to the bank of river Lalbakaiya on Tuesday morning and were about to burn the body.
Police have arrested four persons in connection with the crime. The main accused Bijaya is absconding. The search is on to arrest Sonar, police said.
“We came to know she was beaten to death. The police team immediately reached the site and confiscated the body. Detailed investigation is underway,” said Inspector Govinda Thapa at Area Police Office in Garuda.
The body was taken to Gaur Hospital for postmortem. According to police, there were seven persons and a child in the crematorium when the security team reached there. Some of them fled from the site. There were bruises around the neck of the victim, said police.
