Newa Workshop in London

The script was used in writing Nepal Bhasa and Sanskrit texts, however, the script faced a rapid decline in the 18th and 19th centuries following the institutionalisation of Nepali as the lingua franca in the country. Nonetheless, Newar activists are working towards reviving the Nepal Bhasa in the Kathmandu Valley for the last few years. And, more recently, on March 17, a workshop was organised in Art Pavilion, London to train participants for calligraphy in the Ranjana script.
Organised by World Newah Organisation (UK Chapter) as a way of gearing up for World Newah Day March 31, the workshop received positive reception as the participants were able to write their name without any supervision at the end of the two-hour workshop. Given the peaking interest in heritage-related activities, the organisers plan on organising similar workshops in the future.
Calligraphic works of Nepali artists of Sramdip, Ananda Maharjan and Bimal Bolakhe were also on display during the event.
