Party President Sher Bahadur Deuba, senior leader Ram Chandra Poudel, General Secretary Shashank Koirala were among the top Congress leaders present at the inauguration of the gathering. A total of 75 district treasurers are participating in the closed-session. The gathering concludes on Thursday with a Nuwakot declaration.
Addressing the programme, Deuba underlined the need to make the party stronger and united. Refuting suggestions that he had been involved in factional politics, Deuba said he is working to make the party united.
Senior leader Poudel said stressed the need for developing a culture of democracy inside and outside the party. “The communist forces are already posing threat to democracy, so we must be united to secure democracy,” said Poudel.
General Secretary Koirala, who has stayed away from the party’s factional politics, said a Mahasamiti meeting would put an end to the intra-party dispute. He said the Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting, which begins on Friday, would finalise the date for the Mahasamiti meeting.
Senior leader Prakash Man Singh, who lost to Deuba in the Parliamentary Party leader election, took a dig at the party leadership, pointing to the lack of institutional decision-making system and monopoly of certain leaders in the party. “Party must be operated as per the party statute and due process which is lacking,” said Singh.
Most of the leaders, who spoke at the meeting, called for ending factional politics in the party. The two-day meet will brainstorm the reasons behind party’s defeat in recently concluded elections.
Govinda Pudasaini, the chair of NC district treasurers, said there are two major agendas of the party: ending factional politics in the party and review party’s performance in recently concluded elections to the House of Representatives and Provincial Assembly.
“The two-day gathering will review the party’s performances in the recently concluded elections,” he said. This is the first high-level nation-wide gathering of the party after party suffered a humiliating defeat in the recently concluded polls.
According to Pudasaini, the gathering will submit to the party president and other top leaders a report, digging out reasons behind the party’s poll debacle. “We will publicly make a request to top leaders to end the factional politics which is paralysing the country,” Pudasaini said.
