The All Nepal Football Association (Anfa) elections scheduled for Wednesday has been put off indefinitely following the verdict of Patan High Court which has issued an interim order to call off its general assembly.
A press notice issued by Anfa election committee on Sunday said that scheduled election has been called off as per the directives issued by High Court. The three-member election committee is led by advocates Suman KC.
Acting on the writ petition filed by Bhaktapur District Football Association president Gautam Sukhaju and Makawanpur District Football Association vice-president Manish Shrestha, the High Court on Thursday had issued an interim order to put the election process on hold. The duo have said that Anfa had violated their rights to participate in the election.
Anfa had failed to hold the election of Bhaktapur and Makawanpur districts among 45 member associations of the football governing body due to controversy over the elective representatives. It was the fourth occasion that Anfa election is set to be postponed in three months.
According to Anfa spokesperson and deputy general secretary Sanjiv Mishra, they have informed the world football governing body Fifa and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) of the latest turn of the event. “Anfa has said that it is not in the situation to ignore the court’s verdict and we are yet to receive their reply.
AFC representative Rabi Kumar is set to arrive in Kathmandu on Monday to talk stalks of the current situation,” informed Mishra.
“The only way out for holding prompt election is they both withdraw case from the court and the football governing body hold election at those districts,” said Mishra. A football official, seeking anonymity, said: “There is still a possibility of the case being withdrawn on Monday.”
Two factions, one led by former vice-president Karma Chhiring Sherpa and the another led by Mani Kunwar-backed by disgraced former Anfa president Ganesh Thapa—are contesting in the elections. Sherpa was unavailable for comments.
The Anfa general assembly have 77 votes— one each from 45 district FAs and one each from 14 ‘A’ division clubs. The ‘B’ Division clubs have nine and ‘C’ division five votes while four committees—players, coaches, referee and women commission—will have one vote each.
