Bardiya
The Netra Bikram Chand-led Communist Party of Nepal (CPN) is extorting the businesspersons in Bardiya district.
The CPN activists are demanding large sums of money from businesspersons as donation to the party of late.
The party has demanded some local builders to pay up to two percent of their project earning. The party has also demanded the local timber traders to pay Rs100 for every cubic feet of timber they sell.
Bharat Paudel, the district chairman of Construction Entrepreneurs Association, said they were compelled to cough up the demanded amount for their safety, because the CPN cadres have been known to attack the individuals who do not pay the party.
The business community in Bardiya has urged the government to end the CPN’s reign of terror.
A CPN leader said that the party is also preparing to collect donation from
government employees and teachers in the district.
Local govt staffers told to resign
The CPN-affiliated Jana Parishad Nepal has called for the resignation of all elected representatives of the local units. The outfit has issued a letter in the name of the local representatives, demanding the latter to quit at the earliest. It has also warned of a dire consequence if its call is not heeded.
In its letter, Jana Parishad Nepal has claimed that the elected representatives at the local units do not truly represent the people.
The local administration has strengthened security in Bardiya following the ultimatum issued by the CPN to the local government representatives.
Superintendent of Police Janak Bhattarai said security personnel have been mobilised to provide round-the-clock security to the local units.
He said security has been heightened particularly after an explosions at the offices of Madhuwan Municipality and Gulariya Municipality-9 two weeks ago.
Koshi banda has little impact
DHANKUTA: The Netra Bikram Chand-led Communist Party of Nepal (CPN) enforced a banda in Koshi Zone on Sunday to protest the arrest of its activists. The strike had minimal impact in the region, though. Transportation was partially obstructed in Dhankuta, Tehrathum, Bhojpur, Sankhuwasabha, among other districts, but market places were open as usual. The CNP had called for the banda demanding to release its activists arrested in various districts recently. Meanwhile, a Nepal Army (NA) team defused an improvised explosive device (IED) at Bhanuchowk in Dharan, Sunsari, on Sunday. The IED was placed in the middle of the road. Police suspect the CPN behind the incident. (PR)
