Mar 26, 2018-
Forest fires at Belsrot, Khasibas and Risku in Churiya area of Udayapur have put several settlements in Katari Municipality in danger. Locals said forest fires are getting dangerously close to their homes.
Katari Municipality and the Katari Area Forest Office are working tirelessly to contain the wildfires, Mayor Gyanendra Shrestha said.
Shrestha is leading a team to put out the forest fire at Risku. The team worked the whole night on Saturday to douse the fire that has put 300 households at risk.
Local people’s representatives have also joined hands to fight the ongoing forest fires.
Mayor Shrestha said local people’s representatives, office-bearers of the community forest users groups and locals have been mobilised to contain the forest fire at Belsrot.
The forest fires have already destroyed around 1,000 hectares of forest cover in the area.
In Triyuga Municipality, wildfires have burned through nearly 2,000 hectares of forest land at Handiya, Jogidaha, Lalpata and Patlebas since last week.
