EC to release 44 surplus cars

The PMO had asked the election body to release its surplus cars after several government offices and provincial governments complained of vehicle shortage.
EC Spokesperson Navaraj Dhakal said the commission’s meeting on Friday decided to hand over 27 cars to the PMO and 17 to various other agencies.
“Among the 27 cars being handed over to the PMO, six are Land Cruiser Prados. One was purchased just a few months ago for Chief Election Commissioner Ayodhee Prasad Yadav,” Dhakal said. “Four other Land Cruiser Prados being used by election commissioners are also going to the PMO.
The other cars released by the EC will go to the Vice President’s Office, the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority, the Auditor General’ Office, the Department of Land Management and the Department of Survey, among others.
Several vehicles owned by the EC had been rendered surplus with the completion the three-tier elections, officials said.
The government, which currently lacks the fund to buy new cars for provincial governments and other government offices, has decided to distribute the surplus vehicles provided by the EC and other agencies to where they are needed.
This is only a stopgap solution, though, because the government will be needing at least 80 more vehicles to fulfil the transport needs of the provincial governments, according to PMO Secretary Prem Rai.
“There is a demand for at least 35 vehicles from each provincial government,” he said.
The PMO estimates that around 200 vehicles would be required in total to fulfil the transport needs of the provincial governments.
