Darchula
Local people in Byas Rural Municipality-2 have demolished five makeshift beam bridges built unilaterally by India over Mahakali River in Darchula district.
The Indian authorities had built those bridges over the river that flows between the two countries in Byas area without the consent of Nepal authority.
Locals of Dumling on Tuesday demolished the bridges and threw into river, police said.
India had built eight such bridges as well as a 150-metre track for vehicles to transport construction materials from Ghatibagad to Dopakhya. Another 2-km trail was also built in the same area for the pedestrians.
The locals demolished the bridges in Lakhanpur, Najang and Tambaku areas, police said. There is no human settlement in the area on the Nepali side.
“There is no point to building bridges in the area where there is no settlement,” a local said. “The bridges were built for the benefit of India only. So we destroyed them.”
Tension flared in the area on Monday as the Indian security personnel prohibited the locals from making a similar wooden bridge across the river at Dumling. The Indian army personnel stopped Nepali locals from building the bride in the area, saying that they “haven’t received any order from above” to grant permission.
