The second edition of Kalayan, a series of art exhibits, started at Sarwanam Theatre in Kalikasthan on Friday. The series marks the 36th establishment anniversary of Sarwanam.
The exhibit was inaugurated by author Karna Shakya; in his address to the audience, Shakya said that art is essential to develop positive thinking in an individual. “There is a unique life and world to a piece of art, from which one can extrapolate many positives which may come handy in living one’s life,” Shakya said. “The works on display speak to the universal emotions, pain and pleasure, struggle and peace.”
The first edition of Kalayan concluded on Thursday honouring veteran artists Ramesh Khanal and Narendra Bahadur Shrestha.
The second leg of the series has on display a total of 19 works by 10 eminent artists, in the likes of Pramila Pariyar, Ramesh Shrestha, Jyoti Prakash BK, Nara Bahadur BK, Narendra Bahadur Shrestha, Ramesh Khanal and Punam Kumari Das, among others.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Ashesh Malla, director of Sarwanam, said that the series was initiated to popularise Nepali artists among Nepali audience and ultimately globalise them. “Kalayan is not just an exhibit, it is also a campaign to communicate the sensibilities of the artists to the audience,” Malla said.
The event also saw poet Asim Sagar recite a couple of his poems, titled Abhash and Chakra.
Coordinator of the show, Savitri Kakshapati, said that the exhibit will provide a holistic glimpse to the different art practices popular in Nepali art scape. “The exhibit features works borrowing motifs from traditional Mithila arts to modern practices,” Kakshapati said.
On the occasion of its 36th anniversary, Sarwanam is also organising a solo drama fest featuring plays from seven countries around the world, starting on Monday.
