Thirty-four tonnes of solid waste was collected and managed from various rivers and the Ring Road in Kathmandu Valley as part of the weekly cleaning drive on Saturday.
Eight tonnes of waste was managed from the river banks in Thapathali bridge area as the Bagmati Mega Cleaning Campaign reached its 256th week on the day. Around 550 volunteers, including members of the High-powered Bagmati Civilisation Integrated Development Committee, Nepali Army, Nepal Police, Armed Police Force and other social organisations took part in the cleaning initiative.
The campaign that began four years ago has led to similar other initiatives in 45 major cities and hubs of the country. The cleaning of the same river upstream Guheswari reached its 217th week on Saturday. A tonne of solid waste was collected after cleaning the river area below Hanuman Batika in Ward 5 of Gokarneswar municipality.
Similarly, the 211th week of cleaning of Rudramati River saw an awareness-oriented cleaning initiative on the premises of the Gorakhnath temple in Sano Gaucharan. The initiative began from Ratopul and reached the temple premises via Gyaneshwor. Lawmaker Gagan Thapa was among those lending hand to the clean-up campaign.
Approximately, eighteen tonnes of garbage was extracted from the areas between Rudramati to Chabahil Chowk as part of the Ring Road Clean-up Campaign that reached the 52nd week.
Two tonnes of waste was collected from the areas between Syuchatar and Kalanki Chowk under the Bafal Section of the Ring Road Clean-up Campaign that reached the 34th week on the day.
