Sanu’s uncle Madhav Baruwal, a resident of Ramechhap district, filed the complaint at Area Police Office in Chandrapur on Friday, stating that the woman’s husband and in-laws murdered her over the dowry dispute.
The security personnel detained the woman’s husband Ram Chandra Budhathoki for investigation.
The 22-year-old Sanu was found dead in her residence. Her husband and in-laws claimed that she committed suicide by consuming poison. As per the request of both sides, police sent the body to TU Teaching Hospital in Kathmandu for postmortem.
Sanu was married to Ram Chandra six years ago. They have a daughter. The maternal side said that Sanu’s in-laws repeatedly tortured her saying that she did not bring enough dowry. “My daughter did not commit suicide. They murdered her and staged a drama of suicide,” said the woman’s mother Maiya Baruwal.
Ram Chandra and his parents, however, denied the allegation. “She committed suicide and we don’t know why she did it,” said Ram Chandra, adding that he has been cooperating with police.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Shanti Raj Koirala said they were investigating the case. “It is unclear whether it is suicide or murder yet. We’re waiting for postmortem report,” he said.
