Wild elephant kills woman in Saptari
A woman died in an elephant attack in Saptari district on Tuesday morning. Police said the elephant from Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve (KTWR) attacked Durga Devi Yadav, 45, while she was asleep in her home at Theliya Lakhanpati settlement in Kanchanrup Municipality-11.A woman died in an elephant attack in Saptari district on Tuesday morning. Police said the elephant from Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve (KTWR) attacked Durga Devi Yadav, 45, while she was asleep in her home at Theliya Lakhanpati settlement in Kanchanrup Municipality-11. The tusker also wrecked Yadav’s home in the process. Shyam Kumar Sah of the KTWR shall be providing Rs 50,000 to Yadav’s family as emergency relief. The reserve will also ask the government to provide Rs 1 million compensation.
Wild elephants and water buffaloes have long been troubling the people of Phattepur, Kanchanpur, Kamalpur, Ghoganpur, Badgama, Bairaba, Barajhiya, Portaha and Bhardaha in Saptari.
Wild elephants have killed 17 people in Saptari, Sunsari and Udayapur districts in the past six years. The KTWR covers an area of 175 sq km which is spread in Saptari, Sunsari and Udayapur.
