Needing a victory with healthy margin in their last Group ‘B’ match at the Ranabhumi grounds, Sonnet managed to restrict tournament minnows Birat to 94-5 in 20 overs. A match-winning partnership for the third wicket between Rishav Rai and Faiz Ahmad did the rest as Sonnet reached 95-4 in just 12.4 overs.
The big victory saw Sonnet leapfrog Nepal Armed Police Force (APF) Club to go second in the table on better run rate after the top three teams were tied on four points each from three matches. Sonnet followed group winners Tribhuvan Army Club (TAC) in the last four as APF made an early exit.
In the semi-finals on Friday, Sonnet will play Group ‘A’ winners Nepal Police Club and TAC will meet Phoenix Cricket Club of Assam.
Sonnet had a troublesome reply after Arsalan Akhtar picked up two quick wickets reducing the visitors to 17-2. But Rai (48) and Ahmed (34) shared 77 runs for the third wicket to make sure they play catch up with the APF run rate.
