Sir of Himalayas transforming education

May 18, 2018-

Globalisation is regarded by some people as the ultimate solution to the world’s problems. Proponents had thought that hunger, poverty, and disease would not exist in a globalised world. Education will prevail, poverty will end, and the world will be a better place, or so the idea goes.

Binod Shahi is one of many people who are renowned as teachers. Shahi has devoted much of his life to the people of Dolpa. He has been working in Dolpa to educate children from marginalised communities. Dolpa is regarded as one of the most rural and underdeveloped districts of Nepal and yet the money and resources sent by the government would often be gobbled up by bureaucrats and politicians. Even after much advocacy for social justice in Dolpa, there has been no sign of change. Shahi is an optimist though and has his own philosophy about development that holds the view that Nepal can be self sufficient and prosperous if individuals are willing to change.

On the occasion of Buddha Jayanti, Shahi visited our school. He addressed an audience of 400 students and faculty, expressing his views, ideas and compassion for those who suffer from poverty and marginalisation in Dolpa. For his work, the School awarded Shahi with the Malpi Hero Award 2018. The award is a special recognition award granted by the school to those individuals who have shown zeal, enthusiasm and enduring effort to carry out social service. Our school believes that social service is the first step in one’s self-actualisation as a global citizen. For Shahi’s efforts in rooting out educational malpractice in Nepal, he was nominated as a candidate for the Global Teacher Prize 2018. He is one of the only 50 finalists. Our school also subscribes to the same ethos, believing that every child has the right to education and basic facilities.

Due to the nature of his work, Shahi’s is a nomadic life. Despite all his efforts just, the road to development is a long one. We were fortunate enough to have him in our school where he gained the admiration of many, many students. He has proven how each and every individual can perform to their level best to improve the life of others. His efforts have shown tangible results over the years. Shahi’s efforts are regarded as the epitome of generosity and goodwill by his fans and we have acknowledged him as a Buddha figure for his lasting service to humanity and human welfare. We wish him all the best for the future and would like to support him in all possible ways.
