Epidemiology team starts work in areas affected by bird flu
Epidemiology experts urge Sautarini villagers to take precautions against spread of bird flu virus and seek medical help in case they feel unwell
May 21, 2018-The Epidemiology and Disease Control Division has started collecting samples from farm chickens in Sautarini, Chitwan, after H5N1 virus, commonly known as bird flu, was detected among some fowls.
A five-member team from the division, led by Hemanta Ojha, on Sunday visited the poultry farmers and inquired about the sate of fowls and gathered blood samples for lab test, Bijay Kumar Jha, the chief of District Public Health Office said.
Although the team did not find bird flu among humans, it nevertheless urged thevillagers to take extreme precaution and immediately seek medical attention if they suspect anything awry with their health.
Ojha and his team also taught farmers how to properly dispose of the chickens and poultry products.
A meeting among poultry farmers, suppliers and the government technical team on Saturday had reached the agreement of culling the chickens.
Chief District Officer Jitendra Basnet said some parts of Sautarini have been declared bird flu-affected zones where clean-up work is underway by culling chickens and destroying poultry products.
More than Rs 70 billion has been invested in poultry farming in the country. Over 50 percent of the farms are based in Chitwan.
