Opium cultivation thrives in Jajarkot

Illegal cultivation of opium poppy is flourishing in Nalgadh Municipality, Jajarkot, and the authorities have failed to intervene.Several people in Nalgadh are involved in opium cultivation lured by the prospect of high profit with small investment.
Large tracts of land in Nalgadh have been turned into opium fields in just a few years. Places like Nahakuli, Dware, Mansiri, Banskot, Tantra, Gharanga, Rawat Gaun, Siun, Rup, Khati Gurta and Phumde have become opium producing villages. Farmers can make upward of Rs 500,000 from 1 kg opium seed. Opium cultivation usually takes place in September/October. The plants are ready for harvest by April/May. (RSS)
