Berry is an old Nepal hand in the United States Foreign Service. He served as the deputy chief of mission at the US Embassy in Kathmandu from 2007 to 2009. Incumbent US Ambassador to Nepal Alaina B Teplitz will be posted to Sri Lanka.
Berry is a senior foreign service officer with 25 years of experience as a diplomat, according to his official bio-data. He currently serves as the deputy assistant secretary in the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labour. Previously, he served as the State Department’s Special Envoy for the Human Rights of LGBTI Persons (2015-2017).
Berry has served twice as United States Consul General/Principal Officer, in Amsterdam, the Netherlands (2012-2015) and Auckland, New Zealand (2009-2012).
He has also served in various US missions in Bangladesh, Egypt, Uganda and South Africa.
