Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has instructed chairpersons of all 32 wards and 92 community schools in the metropolis to plant saplings on World Environment Day (WED) on June 5.

KMC’s Environment Division Chief Hari Bahadur Kunwar said the Division office has already sent letters to the ward chairpersons and schools in the metropolis. The metropolis has come up with a motto ‘Kathmandu’s greenery, citizen’s responsibility.’

“This is a perfect time for us to promote our campaign of greenery in the metropolis and inform people to do their bit to reduce pollution in our city,” said Kunwar.

The KMC official said various organisations and clubs in the wards would supply the saplings. More than 1,500 saplings will be planted on WED. Ward-1, Chairperson Bharat Lal Shrestha said, the ward will start digging pits for saplings Sunday onwards.

“We have planned to plant plants in the open spaces our ward offers. We are also considering distributing plants and flower pots to individuals in our ward, so that people can nurture greenery in their homes,” said Shrestha.

Apart from this, the Ward 12 of the metropolis has plans to plant around 500 plants on the environment day. This time the metropolis has already planned to spray water over all newly planted saplings in all the wards. KMC has already purchased five high-pressure cleaning trucks.

The world celebrates the environment day since 1974. It has now expanded into a global platform for public outreach in more than 100 countries to spread awareness and conservation of the environment.
