Coalition for directly elected Prez, says Dahal
Jun 5, 2018-
Nepal Communist Party Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal on Monday said the ruling parties were for directly elected president.
To alter the present parliamentary form of government, they would change the electoral system by amending the constitution, he added. Addressing a press meet organised by the Province 4 committee of the Federation of Nepali Journalists in Pokhara on Monday, Dahal recalled that the erstwhile CPN (Maoist Centre) that he headed had lobbied for directly elected president as an alternative to costly elections.
“We’ll go for presidential system by amending the constitution before next election,” said the former prime minister. The Sanghiya Samajbadi Forum-Nepal, which joined the government recently, is also in favour of directly elected President. The Naya Shakti Party Nepal, led by former Maoist ideologue Baburam Bhattarai, also supports the form of government.
Leaders of the erstwhile CPN-UML, which merged with the Maoist party to form the CPN, have yet to respond to Dahal’s remarks.
