A meeting of the National Assembly on Sunday endorsed its regulations following an agreement to set the tenure of NA members by drawing lots.

The parliament secretariat is preparing to use the method on June 18 to determine the tenure of 59 members of the Upper House in the bicameral federal parliament. According to the constitution, one third of the NA members have a two-year term, another third (20) members have four-year tenure while the remaining have six years. The regulations clear the way for determining the tenure of NA members by lottery.

The 59-member assembly has eight members from each of the seven provinces with the remaining three members appointed by the President on the government’s recommendation. Lots will be drawn separately for open, cluster (women) and provincial quotas.
