Around 600 chickens at a poultry farm in Musikot Municipality-7, Rukum West, died within a span of 24 hours on Friday and Saturday.
Though it was initially suspected that the fowls might have died due to bird flu, the District Livestock Service Office (DLSO) ruled out H5N1 contagion in the farm.
The office said that the farm chickens more likely died of Ranikhet disease.
According to Shobakhar Pandey, owner of the poultry farm, the chickens in his farm started dying from Friday evening and none were alive by Saturday evening. Pandey said he suffered a loss of around Rs 700,000.Traders from Kailali district had reached the farm a few days ago to buy chickens and weighed the chickens with their own weighing scale. The officials of DLSO suspected the disease might have transferred from the measuring instrument.
