Toxic liquor kills six people in Dhanusha

Six people have died and four others have been taken ill due to apparent methanol poisoning after drinking spurious liquor in Kamala Municipality of Dhanusha district.

The victims had consumed liquor at separate shops in Lakkad area in Kamala Municipality-5 on Tuesday evening.

According to the District Police Office in Dhanusha, Ram Nath Paswan, 40, Ram Chandra Paswan, 55, and Manik Paswan, 37, Sabir Miya Ansari, 47, Rajbir Mahato, 38, and Ganga Paswan, 52, died on Wednesday. Jamun Paswan, Bindeshwor Paswan, Asaldev Paswan, Binaya Kumar Thakur and Manoj Sah are receiving treatment in various hospitals in Dhanusha and Siraha.

The liquor shops in Lakkad area get their supply from Pokhariya area in Janaknandani Rural Municipality-2. There are two illegal breweries in Pokhariya that are allegedly operating in collusion with police and local politicians. These two breweries are said to be supplying their hooch to Kamala, Bideha, Janaknandani and even the bordering villages in India. This is not the first incident of hooch-related deaths in Dhanusha. Nineteen people died after consuming illegal brew in the district in 1992. Six people died in 2006.  

Province 2 lawmakers on Thursday for a strong action against the persons responsible for supply and sale of toxic alcohol.

They also demanded the provincial government to take measures to curb illegal production and distribution of alcohol in the region.
