The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has failed to find an alternative to Sisdole landfill site. Earlier, the KMC had said that it would relocate the landfill site to Shyame Kholso.

Sisdole residents are meanwhile angry at the KMC for failing to relocate the landfill site from their area. They have complained of smell emanating from the garbage piles with the start of monsoon season. They say that the KMC has not even bothered to use garbage deodorant and insecticides.

“The metropolis has done nothing from its part. This place cannot hold any more garbage. It has reached its full capacity. We have time and again reminded the metropolis to relocate the landfill site, but they have done noting,” said Chandra Bahadur Balami, chairperson of Kakane Village Municipality-1.

Talking to the Post in November, Hari Bahadur Kunwar, chief of  KMC Environment Division, had said that Shyame Kholso, which is located just 1.1 km west of Sisdole, would be a temporary landfill site until a proper facility is constructed at Banchare Danda in Nuwakot. He had also said that the KMC would start disposing off garbage at Shyame Kholso within six months. 

Kunwar is now saying that the work is in progress. But he did not say when the temporary landfill site at Shyame Kholso will come into operation. “We are not sure about it. The place has to be evaluated by the experts first,” Kunwar said on Monday. 

Around 800 metric tonnes of solid wastes from the Kathmandu Valley are dumped at Sisdole landfill site daily. The Sisdole residents have obstructed the KMC from disposing off wastes in their area on numerous occasions in the past.

Sisdole was originally meant to be a temporary landfill site for just three years. That period expired in 2008.
