Gurung, Magar communities shut Gandaki Province

Jul 10, 2018-The ethnic Gurung and Magar communities enforced a banda in Gandaki Province on Monday, demanding that the province be renamed as Tamuwan-Magarat.

The Provincial Assembly meeting on Friday had endorsed the proposal to name the province as Gandaki with two-thirds majority. Thirty-seven lawmakers from the Nepal Communist Party, 15 from the Nepali Congress and two from the Rastriya Janamorcha Party had voted in favour of the proposal, while two lawmakers from the Naya Shakti Party-Nepal had voted against it.

The banda, led by Tamuwan-Magarat Struggle Committee, affected the daily life in major towns and cities.

In Pokhara, transportation service was greatly hit. Marketplaces, schools and factories also remained closed.

The banda also affected the daily life in Tanahun, Gorkha and Lamjung districts.

Naya Shakti Party-Nepal, Sanghiys Samajbadi Forum-Nepal and Deshbhakta Janatantrik Morcha supported the protest.
