A meeting of the party’s Central Secretariat chaired by Co-chairman and Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli at Baluwatar gave its nod to the regulations prepared by a three-member panel comprising senior party leaders Bam Dev Gautam, Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa and General Secretary Bishnu Poudel.
The panel had been tasked to give the final shape to the party regulations following deliberations in the party’s Standing Committee. The committee had authorised the Central Secretariat to draft the party’s statute.
According to NCP General Secretary Poudel, the regulations will now be sent for printing and then made public. “The sixth meeting of the Central Secretariat has given its nod to the party’s regulations,” Poudel told the media after the meeting.
Meanwhile, the NCP has incorporated a provision in its statute which requires leaders and members of all the party committees to be elected from their respective regions. This means NCP Co-chairmen Oli and Pushpa Kamal Dahal too should be elected from their regions to contest the upcoming General Convention. The party’s 441-member Central Committee, which was formed following the merger between the then CPN-UML and CPN (Maoist Centre), and members of provincial, district executive committees should also be elected as representatives.
The provision has come as a surprise to many as party’s top leaders, including Oli and Dahal, had allegedly agreed to choose leaders with mutual consent marking the upcoming convention as the General Convention of Unity. There are speculations that the two chairmen will mutually take call on their power-sharing modality and induct leaders in other key positions accordingly.
The meeting also discussed on Dr Govinda KC who has been on an indefinite hunger strike for the past 18 days.
PM Oli has expressed his displeasure over NCP’s failure to defend the government.
Addressing party leaders and cadres in a meeting held at party headquarters in Dhumbarahi on Tuesday, PM Oli said the opposition parties have been criticising the government over unnecessary issues.
“The party has failed even to promote good deeds of the government,” Oli said,
adding that the current government has made several efforts to make the country prosperous. “But it isn’t simply possible to do that in just four months.”
