Local peace panels revived

Kathmandu

Jul 24, 2018-

Revoking its earlier decision, the Ministry of Home Affairs has announced to continue with the local peace committees unless another decision is made. The ministry on July 15 dissolved all the district peace committees delegating their authority to respective District Administration Offices despite reservations from two transitional justice bodies. In a statement on Monday, the ministry said the peace committees will continue to function unless decided otherwise. Formed in 2008, the peace committees had been helping the TJ bodies with investigation into war-era cases of human rights violations at the local level. The erstwhile government had withheld their budget with intent to shut them down. However, following requests from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the Commission of Investigation on Enforced Disappeared Persons, the government agreed to release their budget. A peace committee has three officials. (PR)
