Nine thousand one hundred and forty-seven people in Jumla district are living below the poverty line, according to a recent survey conducted by local government bodies.

The survey, carried out by the District Coordination Committee (DDC) in eight local units of Jumla, found that 4,286 people lived in extreme poverty.

Among the people living below the poverty line, 1,267 people are from Kanakasundari, 1,155 from Sinja, 1,219 from Hima, 1,388 from Tila, 1,290 from Tatopani, 1,072 from Guthchaur, 727 from Patarasi and 1,092 from Chandannath.

The local units have been distributing poverty ID cards to impoverished families in the district, said Chhetra Bahadur Budhthapa, programme officer at the DDC.

Earlier, the DDC had trained municipal staff for the implementation of poverty ID card programme.

Raj Bahadur Mahat, chairman of Civil Society, Jumla, said people who were extremely poor in the district were also deprived of basic state facilities.

The ID card programme is expected to give them access to several state benefits and subsidies.

Khadananda Chaulagain, the chief administrative officer of Tatopani Rural Municipality, said the municipal office has already distributed poverty ID cards to 60 people from ward-1.

The office plans to complete the ID distribution process within one week.
