Art critic Mukesh Malla’s latest book on Nepal’s sculptures has hit the shelves. Titled Nepali Samasamayik Murtikalako Aitihasik Ruprekha (The Timeline of Nepali Sculptures), the book has been categorised into three headings—under which the author explains the practices of contemporary, modernist and post-modernist sculptures in Nepal

Speaking about the book, Malla says, “Though the boundaries of what classifies as a modernist or post-modernist sculpture might be fuzzy in Nepal, I used the best of my judgment to categorise them as such.”

Malla, however, doubts that the book includes all of Nepal’s major sculptors. “I have utilised the best of my resources to give a thorough glimpse of the art in Nepal,” Mall adds, “I hope the book includes the major contributors of the various movements in Nepali sculpture.”

Writing a book on such an obscure topic, Malla admits, was not easy. “The culture of keeping records and archiving is yet to prosper in Nepal. Many graduates and art students come to me complaining about it. I hope my book will help satisfy the curiosity of the scholars of Nepali sculpture and inspire them,” Malla says.

This is critic Malla’s eleventh book. Malla has been active in Nepali art writing for four decades.
