NC evasion

Aug 5, 2018-

The Nepali Congress (NC) is now staging a nationwide protest campaign against the Oli government, raising issues such as centralisation of power denying earthquake grants and possibly tampering with the judiciary’s independence (“NC stages nationwide protest,” August 1, Page 3). But many of these issues come down from when NC was in power. By all accounts, NC today is a party in serious crisis. Thanks to its irresponsible acts with reported exchange of all appointments and nominations for cash. Even the election tickets were allegedly exchanged for cash by different power centres in the highly factionalised party, bought mostly by contractors. As a result, the party was drubbed in the last election to an extent unprecedented in its long history. If it were to be a democratic party worth the name, there should have been complete  reshuffle in the party leadership. Instead, they are now out there to deceive the people, banking on the habitual forgetfulness of the voters and waiting for a serious misdeed of the ruling party. For example, the recent Dr Govinda KC case in which PM Oli’s image as a nationalist politician took a severe beating. But the people in NC who still believe in a just leadership ought to do more. If they were able to hold the entire Parliament on Dr KC’s case, why are they so hesitant to remove the stinking corrupt leadership within their own party and give it a fresh new start?
