Time to reform prisons as correctional homes: Mahara
Aug 5, 2018-Speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara has said time has come to develop prisons as the correction home in order to orient the inmates towards positive thoughts.
During an interaction organised on prison reforms and inmates’ rights on Saturday, Speaker Mahara said the prisons should not be made the enclosure for the inmates to languish with the feeling of humiliation and revenge. “Behaviour of the inmates can be changed to encourage them to give up criminal mentality,” he said, urging the bodies concerned to make necessary laws.
“The prisons could also be developed as the skill development centres. If we take positive steps to that end, achievement of peaceful and civilised society is possible,” the Speaker added.
Speaking on the occasion, Attorney General Agni Prasad Kharel said at a time when the prisons were getting crowded, there was no alternative to prison reforms. Former director general of Prison Management Department Krishna Chandra Ghimire made a presentation on the conditions of prisons, legal provisions and measures taken for reforms so far.
