The book, a memoir, chronicles Gautam’s journey from his hometown of Gulmi to the high office of the United Nations.
In the book, Gautam, 69, documents the world events that took place at the turn of the century during his tenure as a senior official at the UN and his collaboration with many distinguished figures in the world. Starting as a Deputy Executive Director of Unicef, Gautam went on to assume the position of Assistant Secretary General at the United States.
“Very few Nepalis have been able to make an impact on the world stage. The boy from Gulmi has truly become a world citizen and in his retirement, he has committed himself to the service of his society. His contribution under Unicef has made the world a safer place for children and mothers,” writes President Bidya Devi Bhandari in a preface of the book, adding, “His experience can help Nepal make up for lost time in its efforts for economic growth and equity. He has contributed substantially to his home country both as an international civil servant and as a civic leader upon his retirement. The story of his life can be a beacon for others to follow.”
Likewise, Sir Richard Jolly, Gautam’s mentor and colleague at Unicef, writes, “Kul’s early life and teenage years are eye opener for those born in the middle-class comfort in richer parts of the world…Readers will enjoy Kul’s insightful and amusing stories of his encounters with celebrities and world leaders. If so much vision and energy can emerge in one person from one village in Nepal, it leaves one wondering what might be possible if the vision, talent and energy hidden in many other corners of the world could be released.”
The book includes episodes where Gautam recounts his encounters with several of world leaders—such as Nelson Mandela, Bill Gates, and Aung San Suu Kyi, among others.
This is Gautam’s second book after 2015’s Lost in Transition: Rebuilding Nepal from the Maoist Mayhem and Mega Earthquake.
