Bham’s debut directorial, The Black Hen, premiered at the Venice Critics Week, in 2015, where the film won the Fedora Award. The Black Hen, Kalo Pothi in Nepali, also was Nepal’s official selection for 2016’s Academy Award.
A Year of Cold will be produced by Shooney Film, which also produced Bham’s debut film. A Year of Cold, a “female-driven survival road movie”, is set in the Himalayas and tells the story of a female refugee who is forced for legal reasons to find her missing husband.
“It’s about love, marriage, and sacrifice, where a girl faces multi-layered complexities and struggles for her identity and a safe home—all the struggles that Nepali women go through for a better life, and to fight against a patriarchal society,” Bham has been quoted as saying.
A Year of Cold received script development funding from ACF, Busan International Film Festival, and won a Sorfund Award, an invitation to the Norwegian South Film Fund’s pitching forum.
Selected alongside A Year of Cold for Locarno’s Open Doors Hub are projects such as Mother (Sri Lanka, France), One of a Kind (Pakistan, US), Rose (Pakistan), Sand City (Bangladesh), The Postman (Afghanistan, Germany), The Women (Myanmar), and White Gold (Bhutan, UK).
