The meeting among the nine top ruling party leaders, however, could not enter the formal agenda—unification process of lower committees—after PM Oli, who is also NCP co-chairman, started briefing the party about a range of issues for more than two hours.
According to a Central Secretariat leader, PM Oli briefed the session highlighting the reasons behind the party’s refusal to recommend Deepak Raj Joshee as new Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
The PM told the meeting that the Constitutional Council had picked Joshee’s name in line with the recommendation made by the Judicial Council but the party had to refute the parliamentary endorsement of Joshee after a string of controversies.
A two-thirds majority of the Parliamentary Hearing Committee (PHC) had rejected Joshee’s nomination last week, citing several reasons including questionable academic credentials. “The endorsement was rejected due to the controversy surrounding Joshee’s name and was not intentional as claimed by the main opposition Nepali Congress,” the leader quoted PM Oli as telling the meeting.
NCP Central Secretariat leader Narayan Kaji Shrestha told the media that Wednesday’s discussion was centered on the NC’s move of framing the government in negative light by playing down the positive works and the government’s international relations.
“The PM also briefed about the government initiative of furthering Nepal’s foreign relations and expediting development works, including the post-earthquake reconstruction drive,” Shrestha said.
The Central Secretariat meets again on Thursday to discuss the unification of the party committees that needs to be completed by August 21 as per the party statute. The party has also decided to hold Standing Committee meeting at the earliest.
