A one-month-old baby died and two other children, aged two and four, were injured when a landslide struck a house at Kedarsiu Rural Municipality-3 in Bajhang district on Sunday morning.

Police said the one-month-old son of Makar Bista, Alish, perished in the landslide, while two-year-old Dhauli and four-year-old Sangita were injured. The landslide triggered by heavy rains had damaged a section of Bista’s two-storey house where the children were asleep.

Fifteen people have died in landslides in Bajhang in the past four months, police said.

In a separate incident, a massive landslide on Sunday morning blocked the Mid-Hill Highway in Kirtipur, Achham.

Hundreds of passengers were stranded as a result.

Tularam Sharma, the engineer of Mid-Hill Highway, Achham, said dozers and workers were dispatched soon after the landslide was reported.

Efforts were still on to clear the landslide debris until late afternoon.

Four-wheelers banned across Banbasa Bridge With the rise in water flow in the Mahakali River, the Indian authorities have prohibited four-wheel vehicles from crossing the Banbasa Bridge that links Nepaland India.

District Police Office in Kanchanpur said the water flow in Mahakali was measured at 105,000 cusec on Sunday noon.

The Indian authorities have been restricting four-wheelers from crossing the bridge whenever water flow in the river exceeds 100,000 cusec mark.

It could take days for the water level in Mahakali to recede below the danger margin due to continuous rainfall in the region, police said.

Meanwhile, a woman drowned in the rain-swollen Syali River in Shuklaphanta Municipality, Kanchanpur, on Sunday.

Police said 46-year-old Gomati Bhatta drowned while attempting to cross the river with her buffaloes. Her body was recovered nearly 4km downstream.
