Internal Affairs and Law Minister of Province 2 Gyanendra Yadav padlocked the main gate of Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) in Janakpur on Sunday for “defying public holiday orders”.

The provincial executive had declared Sunday as a public holiday on the occasion of Janai Purnima and Rakshya Bandhan.

Minister Yadav, who had reached the NRB office with his bodyguard for monitoring, padlocked the main gate after the bank officials reportedly refused to close the office.

“The provincial government had announced holiday as per the legal provision of the country. I padlocked the Nepal Rastra Bank office in Janakpur as for ignoring the provincial government’s decision,” Minister Yadav told the Post.

The padlock was broken by police in late afternoon.

The NRB officials said since the bank falls under the jurisdiction of the federal government, they had no obligation to close the office.

The centre should notify the office in writing, only then the holiday can be approved, the argued.

Most of the offices under federal government had remained opened on Wednesday as well when the provincial executive had declared a public holiday on the occasion of Eid festival.

Public holiday ignored

DHANGADHI: The provincial government’s decision of granting public holiday on Sunday in Karnali Province was not followed by many offices. The district administration offices of all nine districts remained opened, stating that they are under the federal government. District offices of land revenue, survey, customs, Nepal Food Corporation and central bank branches remained opened as usual. Only local level offices and educational institutions were closed for the holiday. Chief District Officer of Kailali Baburam Shrestha said many offices remained open on Sunday as they had not been instructed by the centre about the holiday.
