All hopes on judo

JAKARTA

Aug 29, 2018-

Nepal will pin all its hopes on judo after other medal-hopeful martial arts games taekwondo, karate and wushu returned empty handed. Nepal had brought 187 players from 29 sports disciplines in Indonesia and only judokas and triathletes are left to test their luck. The judo events are beginning from Wednesday.

Nepal are fielding eight judokas that includes Olympian and 12th South Asian Games gold medallist Phupu Lhyamu Khatri. Devika Khadka, Manita Shrestha Pradhan and Poonam Shrestha are other female judokas. The male judo players include Indra Bahadur Shrestha, Sanjit Dangol, Shree Ram Makaju and Rabin Shrestha.

Judo has not won a single medal so far in the Asian Games since it was included from the 1996 edition in Seoul. With Nepali judokas giving modest performance in the international tournaments, judo can write a new history for Nepal and save the country from humiliation.

The biggest expectation will be on Khatri who has been training in Japan under International Olympic Committee scholarship for 2020 Olympics. She is the only female player to win gold for Nepal in the SA Games. Meanwhile, Indra and Manita will also be expected to come up with better performance having won gold in the North Thailand University Judo Championship a month ago. (PR)
