Home Minister Rama Bahadur Thapa on Tuesday summoned Nepal Police chief Sarbendra Khanal at his office and directed him to respond to the complaints of rape and initiate legal action against the perpetrators.
Minister Thapa’s directive follows a torrent of outrage at the government’s failure to take action against the culprits involved in rape.
The minister underlined the need to organise nationwide awareness programmes for all age groups, including parents and children, regarding measures to minimise the rape cases.
Minister Thapa also said that anybody in the police force found involved in settling a rape case by forging an agreement between the rapist and the victim should also be arrested and punished. “Violence against women and children should never be taken for granted,” he said.
Referring to the Kanchanpur incident, Minister Thapa called on all stakeholders—family of the victim, society and police—to cooperate with each other to take the investigation further.
The ministry blamed the unregulated sale and consumption of alcohol and drugs for the rise in incidents of rape and violence against women.
The ministry is planning to launch a nation-wide campaign aimed at regulating alcohol and banned drugs within the next few days. The Home Ministry is said to have forwarded the draft regulations on consumption and selling of alcohol and use of contraband drugs such as marijuana, heroin, cocaine to the Cabinet for approval. The ministry has also launched a crackdown on the increasing sexual contents on social media platforms. (PR)
