Constitution Day should be celebrated as the biggest national festival: PM Oli

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has instructed the government agencies concerned to make sure that the upcoming Constitution Day is celebrated nationwide with gusto.

“The day should be celebrated as the biggest national festival. After all, it is the day that marks the promulgation of the constitution achieved through people’s long struggle and sacrifice,” Oli said during a meeting of the Constitution Day Main Celebrations Committee at the Ministry of Home Affairs in the Capital on Sunday.

The prime minister also proposed including a curriculum on constitution in school textbooks, organising literary seminars on the issues of constitution and prosperity, and installing a monument in front of the Federal Parliament building to celebrate the constitution.

The Constitution Day, which falls on Asoj 3 (September 19), is being celebrated for three days. Prime Minister Oli is also the chairperson of the 33-member Constitution Day Main Celebrations Committee whose members include Chief Justice, Speaker, National Assembly Chairperson and former President.

To handle the publicity works and of the event, the main committee has formed a panel under Communications Minister Gokul Prasad Banskota. Two other panels under Kathmandu Mayor Bidya Sundar Shakya and the Chief District Officer of Kathmandu to organise an event to mark the Constitution Day in the Capital.

According to a programme-schedule for the celebration, all government offices including metropolises and municipalities in the Valley on the first day of the festival will tidy up and decorate the city with national flags.

Likewise, a special panel discussion on the constitution would be broadcast and published on national media, while the National Sports Council is scheduled to organise a marathon and a cricket tournament and observe a diwali by

lighting earthen lamps and candles.

A special ceremony will be held at Tundikhel on the last day of the celebration. Tree plantations and blood donation programmes will also be held across the country as part of the celebrations.
