Comic con is a hallowed event for comic book fans around the world and on Saturday it was held for the second time here in the Capital. Having received immense fanfare and an unanticipated number of enthusiastic fans, the event seems set to take place annually from now on.
Thousands of comic book, science fiction, anime/manga fans flocked to the Bhrikuti Mandap Garden to participate in the second edition of Comic Con Nepal, a local iteration of the renowned international Comic Convention that originated in San Diego, 48 years ago.
The original Comic Con had showcased comic books and science fiction/fantasy related film, television, and similar popular arts, as well as provided a platform where fans would interact with their favourite authors and artists. With time, the convention has gone international and has started including a larger range of pop culture and entertainment elements across virtually all genres.
The highlight of the Comic Con event in Nepal this weekend was undoubtedly the cosplayers—fans who embodied their favourite comic character. However, it also featured over a 30 exhibitors who showcased a larger range of pop culture elements ranging from anime-manga to feature films and form toys to web comics and even video games.
The event also provided a networking platform for up-and-coming Nepali writers, manga artist, and game creators to explore and share their enthusiasm for pop culture—mostly Japanese and American.
The organisers claim that such conventions play an important role in raising awareness among the masses about licensed toys and products, the art of comic book writing and animation.
Organisers hope that the event, over time, will become a Kathmandu mainstay.
