A woman died after receiving treatment at a drugstore in Thalahabazaar, Jajarkot, on Friday.

Police said 38-year-old Panchakala Nath Yogi of Chhedagad Municipality-10, who was suffering from fever and chest infection, died after receiving treatment at Jayalaxmi Medical Shop. Panchakala’ son Kishor claims that his mother died due to the medical operator’s negligence.

“My mother was given medicines and three vaccines during her treatment on Thursday. She died on her way home from the medical,” said Kishor.

Following Panchakala’s death, locals and relatives of the deceased staged a demonstration in Thalahabazaar.

The body of the deceased has been taken to Jajarkot District Hospital for post-mortem.

The said medical shop is operated by Tilak Bohara of Salyan. A year ago, the District Administration Office had sealed the medical shop, citing that it was operated illegally. Police arrested Bohara on Friday.

Inspector Lok Bahadur Bista said that Bohara has been operating the shop illegally for the last 21 years.

“He has been taken to District Police Office for further investigation,” said Bista.

There are many illegal drugs stores being operated in the remote parts of Jajarkot district.

25 percent pregnant mothers deliver babies at home

ACHHAM: Around 25 percent of pregnant women, mostly from remote areas, still give birth at home in Achham district, according to the data of the District Public Health Office. “Around 100 birthing centres are needed in

the district,” said Jhanak Dhungana, district public health officer, adding that the local unit should take initiatives to open birthing centres in the remote areas.

Though there are 65 birthing centres in the district, the majority of women do not receive services from the

centres. Dhauli Dhakal, a women’s health volunteer said, “Most women are compelled to give birth at home because the birthing centres are usually far from the rural areas.”
