The hill districts in Province 7 are reeling under a shortage of food grains ahead of the festival season.

Demand for rice has surged in all seven hill districts of the province in the recent days, so much so that the regional warehouse of Nepal Food Corporation (NFC), the state food agency, is unable to meet.

The district of Bajura alone has demanded 2,000 quintals of rice. But the NFC regional office in Dhangadhi, Kailali, only has 3,300 quintals of rice stocked for emergency.

The NFC depots in Bajhang and Achham districts have also demanded the regional office to supply subsidised rice before Dashain festival.“We have asked for help from the depots in Jhapa and Bardiya to address the ongoing food insecurity in these districts,” said Gangadatta Panta, chief of the NFC regional office.

The NFC regional office would need at least 10,000 quintals of rice before Dashain, he added.Last year, the NFC had allocated 47,000 metric tonnes of rice for the food-insecure areas in the Farwest. Dan Singh Bhandari, a resident of Melauli in Batadi district, said people from his village have been visiting the NFC depot for rice for weeks now, only to return home empty handed.

“The depot staff say they have run out of rice. There will be no Dashain for us if the depot fails to distribute rice in time,” he said.
