Woman assaulted by husband and in-laws for demanding citizenship
Oct 1, 2018-
A 19-year-old woman in Saptari has been hospitalised after sustaining serious injuries in an incident of domestic violence.
Prem Kala Thakur of Musaharniya Village in Rajbiraj Municipality-15 was admitted to Gajendra Narayan Singh Sagarmatha Zonal Hospital on Saturday night.
According to Mohan Thakur, the victim’s father, she was badly beaten on Saturday by her husband and in-laws when she requested them to apply for her citizenship certificate and register her marriage.
She has bruises all over her body and has been passing out recurrently because of pain.
Thakur said her daughter has been subjected to numerous incidents of domestic violence ever since her marriage to Manoj a year ago.
He said her in-laws were reluctant to register the marriage and get her citizenship certificate.
In the past, Thakur said he would settle the incidents of his daughter’s abuse at the presence of local representatives and never filed a lawsuit to save his daughter’s marriage. On Saturday, though, he went to rescue his daughter upon learning that she was beaten and confined in the house by her in-laws.
“Had I not reached on time and took her to the hospital, she would have died,” said Thakur.
He said he lodged a complaint at Saptari District Police Office against Prem Kala’s husband and in-laws.
Assistant Sub-Inspector Min Bahadur Chhetri of Women and Children Service Desk at the District Police Office said they have deployed a police team to search for the accused family members after a case of domestic violence was registered. “The accused family members have been absconding,” he said.
