KMC plans to install 1,800 CCTV cameras

KATHMANDU : Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC), with the help of Rani Pokhari Metropolitan Police Office (RPMPO), Metropolitan Traffic Police Division(MTPD) and Nepal Police Headquarters (NPH), plans to install 1,800 CCTV cameras across the metropolis.
The MTPD has already installed 460 CCTV cameras on major road sections to monitor and book people who violate traffic rules and perform unlawful activities.“The metropolis is more focused on installing CCTV cameras along the inner alleys of the metropolis and the river banks to ensure people’s security,” said Gyanendra Karki, spokesperson at the KMC.
Karki said the CCTVs will also keep surveillance on unlawful garbage dumping in the public areas, and keep tabs on the garbage collectors to check if they do their jobs effectively.
Public Private Partnership Unit Chief Mahesh Kafle said the next meeting with the stakeholders will finalise the placements of the CCTVs.“Once we estimate the funding, we will do field inspection and work on the installations,” said Kafle.He said fifty percent of the funding will be given by the Ministry of Home affairs and fifty percent by the KMC.The metropolis plans to place the control room in City Hall, Pradarshani Marg. Officials from KMC and RPMPO will jointly monitor the CCTV.
Police officials said the CCTV monitoring in the valley has been effective in booking traffic violators. The MTPD in the last seven months has booked 1,o50 traffic rules violators. MTPD Spokesperson Superintendent of Police Rajkumar Lamsal has welcomed the move of the metropolis, saying this will help monitor traffic in the inner part of the valley.
