Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa has insisted on the need of a campaign against social evils like drug abuse, alcoholism and violence against girls and women.
Speaking at a function in Kathmandu on Friday, Thapa said such misconducts are barriers to the country’s development and prosperity, and underlined the need to overcome them.
“A prosperous Nepal can never be built until all the crimes are controlled,” he said.
Stating that development, prosperity, good governance and peace were the optimum state of socialism, he sought the collaboration between people and the government to meet the goals of socialism.
“Anti-peace forces are still active in the society and we must be aware of it,” Thapa added.
70 percent of the cases of women violence are because of alcoholism. Protests and campaigns against such ill practices are essential to combat the violence.
Prem Kumar Rai, secretary at the Home Ministry, said efforts should be made from the local level to control alcohol abuse and regulate and systematise its business.
Kathmandu Mayor Bidya Sundar Shakya said the Metropolis had installed closed circuit cameras at various locations to monitor violence. He added that the Metropolis was ready to cooperate with the traffic police for traffic management in town by finding a solution to the issue of haphazard parking.
